This stamp was issued by India Post on 4th December 1979 for the XXIII International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference which was held in New Delhi between 4th –10th December 1979. The Conference brought together representatives from member states, observers, and various international organisations to discuss key issues relating to nuclear energy and its peaceful applications.

The XXIII IAEA General Conference was held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, and was inaugurated by India’s then, Prime Minister, Mr. Charan Singh. Mr. Homi Nusserwanji Sethna, the then Secretary to the Government of India's Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission, was elected President of the Conference.

During the Conference, India showcased its advancements in the field of nuclear technology and its contributions to the global atomic energy community. The event provided an opportunity for India to highlight its scientific establishments and cultural heritage.

The IAEA was created in 1957, and India became a member of the IAEA the same year.
