The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of the "Great Living Chola Temples" in 1987.
Known in the inscriptions as Dakshina Meru, the Brihadeeswara temple was inaugurated by the Chola King, Rajaraja I (985 – 1012 CE) around 1003-1004 CE and consecrated by him around 1009 – 1010 CE.
The Great Living Chola Temples were built by the Chola Empire, which stretched over all of south India and the neighbouring islands. The site includes three temples built between the 10th – 12th centuries: The Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Brihadeeswara Temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram.
