On 21st January 2002, India Post issued this commemorative stamp featuring the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya as a part of the Bauddha Mahotsav Festival set. The design of the stamp highlighted the spire of the Mahabodhi Temple, symbolising the site of Buddha’s enlightenment.

The Mahabodhi Temple is one of the most important and revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, dating back to the late Gupta period. It is said to marks the very location where Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and subsequently became the Buddha. The site has been a centre of Buddhist worship and devotion for over two millennia. The temple’s architecture is a blend of ancient Indian styles and Buddhist symbolism, making it a significant historical and cultural monument.

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The Mahabodhi Temple's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list highlights its importance not only as a religious site but also as a cultural and historical landmark.
