On 24th October 1986, India Post issued this commemorative postage stamp to mark the International Year of Peace. The stamp symbolises India's commitment to global peace, disarmament, and development, reflecting humanity's collective aspiration for a peaceful world amidst geopolitical tensions.
The International Year of Peace was declared through the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/40/3. The idea was first proposed during the UN conference in November 1981 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with the year 1986 chosen to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the UN's establishment. The declaration was adopted without a vote at the 37th plenary meeting of the General Assembly on 17th October 1985.
The International Year of Peace also aimed to address the persistent threat of nuclear war, and the global arms race. The year also sought to foster international cooperation and highlight the interdependence of peace, disarmament, and development. Each year the opening day of the General Assembly is observed as International Peace Day.
On International Peace Day in 1986, hundreds of children, diplomats, musicians, and celebrities gathered at UN Headquarters to celebrate 1986 as the International Year of Peace.
