On 5th June 2010, India Post issued this commemorative postage stamp to mark the International Year of Biodiversity. This stamp was a part of a global initiative to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect it.

The International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) was declared by the UN General Assembly by resolution 61/203 on 20th December 2006 and was celebrated throughout 2010. The initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the urgent need to halt biodiversity loss.

India officially launched the IYB on 4th January 2010, when India’s Minister for Environment and Forests released a brochure titled “Achieving 2010 Biodiversity Target: India’s Contributions”. Throughout 2010, states across the country held exhibitions and educational events involving schools, NGOs, and local communities. Several scientific conferences and workshops were organised on topics like marine life, agrobiodiversity, and climate change. India also showcased its biodiversity efforts internationally at the Convention on Biological Diversity COP-10 summit in Nagoya, Japan.
