Through the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/36/40, 1983 was proclaimed the World Communications Year. India Post decided to commemorate the year by issuing this stamp on 18th July 1983.

The purpose of the declaration of the World Communications Year was to increase the scope and effectiveness of communications and stimulate the accelerated development of communications infrastructures.

During World Communications Year, India conducted several activities aimed at enhancing the awareness about telecommunications. State Capitals together with local Chambers of Commerce and industry organised seminars stressing the special needs of communication in different sectors of the economy as well as communication as an essential infrastructure for India. India’s celebrations of the World Communication Year culminated in an ‘All India Conference’ in New Delhi, where specialists from different sectors came together to address challenges, and formulate long–term policy solutions for India’s communications infrastructure.
