Commemorating the Khajuraho Millennium, India Post issued this stamp of a sculpture from the Khajuraho temple on 6th March 1999. In 2000, the Khajuraho temples celebrated thousand years of existence. Hence, initiated by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the period between March 1999 – March 2000 was declared as the “Khajuraho Millennium”.
The temples at Khajuraho were built during the Chandella dynasty, which reached its apogee between 950 – 1050 CE. Only about 20 temples remain, and all belong to Hinduism and Jainism.
Khajuraho was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1986.
