This commemorative postage stamp issued by India Post in 1974 celebrated the 25th anniversary of UNICEF's presence in India. This stamp was released on 14th November 1974, and highlighted UNICEF's efforts and contributions towards improving the lives of children in India over those 25 years.

Between 1949 – 1974, UNICEF played a vital supporting role in India’s development journey, providing technical assistance, equipment, and resources across health, education, nutrition, and water sectors. In 1949, UNICEF supported the establishment of India’s first penicillin plant at Pimpri by supplying equipment and expertise. By 1954, UNICEF backed the Government of India’s initiative to set up milk processing plants in Aarey and Anand, which laid the groundwork for what became the White Revolution, transforming India into the world’s largest milk producer.

That same year, in 1954, UNICEF supported the Government of India with equipment for India’s first DDT plant, aiding the National Malaria Eradication Programme. In 1966, when Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh were struck by a severe drought, UNICEF responded to a request from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by supplying drilling rigs to help secure safe drinking water. This emergency intervention evolved into a long-term partnership, with UNICEF becoming a key contributor to India’s national rural drinking water supply programme.
