The occasion of the 25th anniversary of the UN in 1970 was marked by the issuance of stamps by many countries, including by India Post. India issued this stamp on 26th June 1970 .

By 1970, the UN had achieved several milestones in the realms of peace and development. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which aims to halt the spread of nuclear weapons, was approved by the General Assembly in 1968, with nearly all the world’s nations party to it.

By 1970, India had made significant strides for defending the values of the UN: India was actively engaged with the organisation of the historic Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955. Five years later, India was the co-sponsor of the landmark 1960 Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, which was adopted by the General Assembly. The Declaration proclaimed the need to unconditionally end colonialism in all its forms and manifestations. India also firmly opposed apartheid and racial discrimination and raised the issue at the UN as early as 1946. India had also significantly contributed to UN peacekeeping efforts, including during the Congo Crisis between 1960–1965. By the time of the issuance of this stamp, India had already served on the Security Council twice – between 1950 – 1951, and 1967 – 1968.
