On 20th November 1994, India Post issued this stamp to commemorate the International Year of the Family, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly resolution 44/82 on 9 December 1989. The theme of the year was "Family: resources and responsibilities in a changing world", and the motto was: "Building the Smallest Democracy at the Heart of Society.

This stamp features the emblem of the International Year of the Family, symbolising the importance of families as fundamental units of society.

The 1994 International Year of the Family was celebrated in India through awareness campaigns, conferences, cultural programs, educational initiatives, and media campaigns to highlight the importance of families in society.
