On 20th November 1994, India Post issued this stamp to commemorate the International Year of the Family, which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly resolution 44/82 on 9 December 1989. The theme of the year was "Family: resources and responsibilities in a changing world", and the motto was: "Building the Smallest Democracy at the Heart of Society.
