India is one of the 51 founding members of the UN who signed the UN Charter on 26th June 1945. The Charter mandates the UN to maintain peaceful and friendly relations among nations, strengthen international law, address development challenges and promote human rights. The UN Charter came into force on 24th October 1945 which, since that day, has been observed across the world as UN Day.

India’s multilateral vision was reiterated in its participation in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Over the years, India’s commitment to multilateralism has not wavered, spanning a broad spectrum of support – including UN Peacekeeping, climate change, human rights and sustainable development.
