To commemorate the International Day of Yoga, the UN Postal Administration (UNPA) issued this set of stamps, each depicting various yoga postures and the sacred “Om” symbol on 21st June 2017. The date of issuance coincided with the 3rd International Day of Yoga.
An International Day of Yoga was proposed by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly on 27th September, 2014.
During his speech, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well–being . . . Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day”.
Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. Today, it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.
