India Post issued this commemorative postage stamp on 24th October 1985, to mark the 40th anniversary of the UN. The stamp is a depiction of Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru addressing the UN General Assembly in 1961

By the time of the UN’s 40th anniversary, the UN and its specialised agencies had advanced international relations by promoting decolonisation, addressing economic-social issues in developing countries, advocating human rights and self-determination, and adopting key international legal instruments like the International Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

By this time, India was significantly engaged within the UN on issues like decolonisation, disarmament, peacekeeping, and human rights.
