India Post issued this commemorative postage stamp on the International Day of Peace on 21st September 2005. This stamp features an illustration of children watering a tree with a stylised flower, symbolising peace and growth.
The International Day of Peace was first established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly to coincide with its opening session every September. In 2001, the date was fixed to 21st September, to be observed as the annual day of nonviolence and cease-fire.
On 21st September 2005, UN Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan called for the worldwide observance of a 24-hour cease-fire and day of nonviolence to mark the International Day of Peace. This call was part of a broader effort to promote peace and security worldwide, following a historic summit of world leaders at the UN Headquarters from 14th – 16th September the same year.
