On 5th June 2005, India Post issued this commemorative stamp to mark the World Environment Day with the theme "Green Cities: Plan for the Planet". This stamp formed a part of a broader initiative to raise awareness about sustainable urban development and the importance of creating environmentally friendly cities.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5th June since its establishment through the UN General Assembly resolution 2994 (XXVII) in 1972. The day aims to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment.

The 2005 theme, "Green Cities: Plan for the Planet", highlighted the challenges and opportunities associated with urbanisation and the need for sustainable urban planning.

In India, various activities were organised to promote the theme, including tree planting, awareness campaigns about global warming, and initiatives related to waste reduction and wildlife conservation.
