On 18th March 2023, India Post released this special stamp commemorating the International Year of Millets.
The UN General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets through resolution A/RES/75/263, adopted on 3rd March, 2021, following India's proposal. The resolution focused on promoting the sustainable production and consumption of millets and raising global awareness about their nutritional and climate-resilient benefits. It also underlined the importance of international cooperation and investment in research and development to improve millet production and quality, positioning millets as a key component of sustainable agriculture and nutrition.
The resolution stressed the promotion of sustainable food systems that foster diversified, balanced, and healthy diets, aligning with the goals of the UN’s Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025). It acknowledged the role of agricultural technologies and digitalisation in enhancing the sustainability of various aspects of the food system, including transport, processing, transformation, retail, waste reduction, and recycling.
During the International Year of Millets 2023, India played a pivotal role in promoting millets globally. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference in 2023 brought together agriculture ministers from six countries. It also featured the unveiling of the customised postal stamp.

With an outlay of USD 92 million, the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry for Millet-based Products scheme was implemented to boost the production and processing of millet-based products between 2022 – 2027.
