On International Women’s Day on 8th March 2016, the UN Postal Administration (UNPA) and India Post jointly launched this set of HeForShe stamps. This was the first time instance of the India Post and the UNPA coming together for the issuance of stamps.
Launched on 20th September 2014, by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson, the HeForShe campaign garnered global commitments, including from Heads of State and luminaries. India Post and UNPA released these stamps to honour HeForShe, highlighting the equal importance of girls and women in humanity. The HeForShe campaign invited men and boys to build on the work of the women’s movement as equal partners, crafting and implementing a shared vision of gender equality that will benefit all of humanity.
UNIFEM (that predates UN Women) began its work in India in 1989. In July 2010, UN Women commenced its work, in line with the UN General Assembly resolution that created UN Women, with India as a founding member.
UN Women works closely with the Government of India and other partners and stakeholders for advancing gender equality and strengthening women’s rights.
