On 1st April 1998, India Post issued this commemorative stamp to mark the 1st Assembly Meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which was held between 1st – 3rd April 1998, in New Delhi. The event brought together environmentalists, parliamentarians, business leaders, scientists, and civil society organisations to discuss global environmental challenges and strategies for sustainable development.

The GEF, established in 1991, is a partnership between 183 countries, international institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to address global environmental issues. The GEF also partners with various UN agencies including UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, FAO and IFAD.

The stamp symbolises India's support to the GEF's mission to tackle pressing environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and land degradation.
