India Post issued this special stamp on 10th December 2008, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
The stamp features four icons that contributed to human rights: Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa and Dr. Martin Luther King.
Human Rights Day is annually celebrated on 10th December to honour the adoption of the UDHR by the UN General Assembly in 1948. The theme for the 2008 Human Rights Day was “Dignity and justice for all of us”, reinforcing the vision of the UDHR as a commitment to universal dignity and justice.
India played a key role in the creation of the UDHR, particularly in ensuring the respect for human rights. Indian delegates, including Mrs. Hansa Jivraj Mehta and Mrs. Lakshmi Menon, were actively involved in drafting the UDHR, advocating for its principles to ensure and promote gender equality.
