The Conference, along with the UN Decade for Women (1976-1985), launched a new era in global efforts to promote the advancement of women by inspiring a worldwide dialogue on gender equality.
During the conference, three objectives were identified in relation to equality, peace and development for the decade, namely:
- Full gender equality and the elimination of gender discrimination.
- The integration and full participation of women in development.
- An increased contribution by women towards strengthening world peace.
Subsequent World Conferences on Women were held in Copenhagen in 1980, Nairobi in 1985 and Beijing in 1995.
