On 10th November 1961, India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, addressing the UN General Assembly, suggested dedicating the year of the 20th anniversary of the UN to international co-operation, to emphasise the role of the international community in the development of the world.

Nehru’s idea was passed by the UN General Assembly through resolution 1907 on 21st November 1963, designating 1965 the International Year of Co-operation (IYC).

The UN Committee for the IYC, including India, requested, through the Universal Postal Union (UPU), that member countries should consider issuing stamps on the occasion. Dozens of countries, including India, participated. India issued this stamp on 26th June 1965.
