This International Union of Railways commemorative stamp issued by India Post celebrated the 50th anniversary of the International Union of Railways (UIC). This stamp was released on 30th June 1972, to honour the significant contributions of the UIC in promoting and coordinating international railway operations and standards.
The UIC, established in 1922, has been instrumental in standardising railway operations, facilitating international rail traffic, and promoting technological advancements in the railway sector. India has been a member of the UIC since its founding in 1922.
The UIC has a longstanding relationship with the UN, particularly through its consultative status with various UN bodies. Since 1950, the UIC has been recognised as an internationally accredited non-governmental organisation in consultative relations with the UN. This status allows the UIC to actively participate in UN initiatives and contribute to discussions on sustainable development and transportation.
In 2015, the UIC's role with the UN was elevated to a special status, enabling more active cooperation with the UN Secretary-General and participation in key events such as the Conference of Parties (COP) organised by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
