India Post issued this stamp in commemoration of the 1968 UN Conference of Trade and Development (UNCTAD). UNCTAD was established in 1964 to assist in the integration of developing countries into the global economy. The 2nd UNCTAD Conference was held in New Delhi between 1st February – to 29th March 1968, with delegates attending from 132 countries.

The Conference is UNCTAD’s highest policy making body and the forum where member states make assessments of trade and development issues. The Conference in New Delhi, inter alia, reviewed recent developments and the implementation of recommendations from the first UNCTAD Conference. Efforts were made to achieve consensus on principles governing international trade relations and policies conducive to development. The discussions also addressed trade relations among countries with different economic and social systems, particularly focusing on the trade interests of developing countries and considering the work of other UN organs, including regional economic commissions. The Conference also highlighted the special challenges faced by land-locked countries, including the transfer of technology, know-how and patents.
