The new headquarters to house the Secretariat of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) were inaugurated on 20th May 1970 in Berne, Switzerland. The event was commemorated by the issuance of stamps across the world, including through this stamp issued by India Post.
The move was a result of the increasing need to accommodate UPU’s expanding activities and the inclusion of the, then, newly independent countries as member states.
Established in 1874, the UPU is one of the oldest international organisations of the UN. India became a member of the UPU on 1st July 1876, and was the first Asian nation to join the organisation.
With 192 member countries, the UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players. It assists in ensuring a universal network of up-to-date products and services. The UPU establishes the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve quality of service for customers.
