On 14th November 1974, India issued this stamp in support of the World Population Year’s goals to raise awareness around population trends, family planning options and to expand technical assistance on population issues.

The UN General Assembly designated 1974 as the ‘World Population Year’. At that time, there was increasing concern that the world population was growing at an unsustainable rate.

India was the first country in the world to launch a National Programme for Family Planning in 1952. In April 2023, India became the most populous country in the world.
