This stamp, issued on the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) illustrates one of the organisation’s most significant health cooperation programmes – universal child immunisation. At the time, it was estimated that approximately 1 million children died every year from diseases that could be prevented through immunisation.
In 1978, India launched the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) with the objective of reducing illness and death from five diseases by providing immunisation to all eligible children and pregnant women by 1990. In 1985, EPI was accelerated by launching the Universal Immunisation Programme (UPI). As of 2025, India’s UIP is one of the world's most extensive public health programmes. India’s Full Immunization coverage for FY 2023-24 stands at 93.5%.
UNICEF continues its work to protect the lives of children and promote their development, and its commitment to India is currently the largest of any single country.
